The Maine Coon cat is know in world of the feline as the clown of the species. The Maine Coon cat is loving, affectionate, sweet natured, friendly and very playful.
As much as the enjoy their independence, they love to play around and practice their hunting skills in the garden, they can usually be found in the chair next to yours, curled up and fast asleep.
Although the majority of these cats are not described as lap cats they can pretty much be guaranteed to always be in the humans company, either asleep nearby or trying to help in whatever activity their humans are involved in. Where does the Maine Coon come from?
It is a little difficult to ascertain where the Maine Coon cat originates from as nobody actually knows. There are various stories surrounding the origins of this breed one of which is completely ridiculous and physically impossible which is that it is a cross between a domestic cat and a raccoon because of the similarity in the coloring of the Maine Coon cat and a raccoon.
The other is that these cats are decedents of cats sent over to US to await the arrival of Marie Antoinette as fled France during the Revolution.
There is no clear substantiated proof of where these cats originated from other than their complete suitability to the habit of the State of Maine being short summers and very long cold winters with long periods of snow.
What type of Body does the Maine Coon cat have i.e. coat, patterns etc?
The Maine Coon cat body characteristics include:
- Large body (males fully matured 12lb – 18lbs and females 10lb – 14lbs)
- Muscular.
- Semi longhaired, fluffy coat.
- Large head.
- Large ears set far apart and slightly pointed.
- Almond shaped eyes.
- Long tail, can be longer than the cats body.
Slow to fully develop the Maine Coon cat is not fully matured until they are around three to five years old. They remain playful throughout their lives although the females tend to behave more in an adult fashion than the male.
They are not very vocal cats but when they are their voices are soft compared to their size. They have a individual sound all their own which is a very sweet chirping sound. They rarely miaow.
The eye color us usually either green, copper or gold and bears no relation their coats, their coat color can be self colors including tortoiseshell, white tabby with or without silver, smoke and shaded colors and all the above with white but the white must not cover more than a third of the coat color. History of the Maine Coon?
There is little to nothing known about the history of the Maine Coon cat definitively. It is believed seaman arrived on the US shores with longhaired cats that bred with the local population of shorthaired cats. The outcome of which produced strong, large cats with semi longhaired coats in various colors with a large bushy tail that resembled the racoon which accounted for its name.
Food the Maine Coon eats?
The Maine Coon cat will eat normal cat foods whether it’s a tined food or biscuit. You must always follow recommended feeding guidelines for your breed of cat. These cats can have a tendency to overeat and become overweight so a close eye must be kept on their diet.
Is the Maine Coon an indoor or outdoor cat?
The Maine Coon cat is not as independent as a lot of its species but will enjoy practicing its hunting skills outdoors (they are known for the mouse catching ability) but they are equally happy to curl up on the sofa in the warm.
Does the Maine Coon have health problem?
