History of the German Rex?

Of the Rex breeds the German Rex is believed to be the oldest. Like its Cornish and Devon cousins the German Rex was as a result of a spontaneous mutation in ordinary domestic house cats. The first recorded German Rex was born in the 1930’s in East Prussia.

He was a blue tom cat called Munk. Thereafter a female was spotted making her home in a hospital in Berlin and bringing much pleasure to the patients and staff alike. A doctor in the hospital took a particular shine to her and taking her home adopted her. Named Lämmchen because of her uniquely lamb-like coat she had many kittens in her life.

It was later discovered that it would take two curly coated cats to produce a litter of curly coated kittens. Although not as popular a breed as the Cornish Rex and Devon Rex by the late 1990’s it was thought there were only a handful of German Rex’s left. A couple of interested cat breeders felt it would be a challenge to bring this breed back from extinction and have been successful. Read also: Asian Semi-longhair Cat Breed Information.
