Cats Diet and Nutrition

Undoubtedly good nutrition is essential for your cat's health. The best diet for your cat is a diet rich in moisture, full of meat.

Cats are carnivores and therefore require more quality protein source in their diets than most other animals, preferably feeding your cat with a diet consisting mostly of high quality canned foods.

Why canned food is best for your cat?

Cats do not drink as much water as you may need because they usually rely on their diet for moisture. Canned foods contain more moisture than dry or sub-humid foods.

Canned foods can be especially beneficial for cats with problems with diabetes, urine and other diseases, as well as in the prevention and treatment of obesity because they are low in carbohydrates.

We know that eating only canned foods can lead to dental disease, and that most dry meals do not significantly improve dental health, but in fact it was found that only dry diets identified with the VOHC seal reduce calcification and periodontitis.

How often should I feed?

We recommend replacing free food with food. Feeding with food means that you feed a certain amount of food instead of wasting a lot of dry food so your cat can eat grass all day. You can use food labels as a guide and eat twice a day.

Then contact your veterinarian during your cat's annual or semi-annual inspection to confirm the amount. The amount of food may vary depending on the cat's ideal weight and activity level. Meal feeding also gives you the opportunity to control your cat's appetite and helps you discover any changes in your cat's overall food intake, which is usually one of the first signs of stress or illness. Depending on the cat, it is best to consult your veterinarian before implementing any diet regimen.

Which flavor should I choose?

Each cat has its own preferences, so you may want to test many different flavors and brands to find out what your cat prefers. However, it's important to avoid eating too many fish flavors because fish are rich in magnesium, heavy metals, and thiaminase, which can harm your cat's health. Read also: Dehydration in the Cats.

This food is cheaper. Is it the same quality food?

Check the first ingredient if you are unsure about the quality of cat food. If the first ingredient is fish or meat it is probably a good brand, if it is not meat or fish, but rice, corn or grain derivatives such as gluten or soy, It is not recommended.

For some assurance that the food has met the minimum nutrient standards, check with the American Feed Control Officials Association (AAFCO) certification.

It may be best to feed foods that contain muscle meat such as turkey and chicken in addition to or instead of organic meat such as liver.

What about "semi-wet" cat food?

We don't recommend you use these highly processed foods because they are rich in magnesium (which can cause urethral problems) and carbohydrates, and they have very low nutritional value. In addition, their dyes, preservatives and other additives can cause allergic reactions in some cats.

What about dry cat food?

Many cats enjoy dry food. It is an easy and convenient choice for guardians. However, feeding dry food permanently is not always the best option for your cat because it is high in carbohydrates and can cause the development of diabetes, obesity, diarrhea, or vomiting, problems with Urinary tract or kidney.

If your cat follows a dry-food-only diet and suffers from any of these diseases, you may want to consider reducing the amount of dry food you feed, or replacing it with a good-quality moist food.

What about raw food?

Many believe that raw food, if properly prepared and fed, is the most natural and nutritionally complete diet, yet there are some risks involved.

If this feeding option is of interest to you, we recommend that you discuss it with your veterinarian. Whether you make it yourself or buy it, consult your veterinarian to make sure your cat's diet is complete.

Although cats are carnivores, they cannot live on meat alone; they require nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and amino acids.

Are table scraps good?

We do not recommend feeding them too much, experts suggest keeping snacks on the table less than 10 percent of the daily consumption of cats. Meat or some vegetable or fruit treatments will not hurt occasionally, as long as you feed them in small doses.

If your cat has lactose intolerance, not being fed by dairy products, don't also feed it fried foods or sweets as it can contribute to problems such as diabetes, obesity and upset stomach.

Never feed cooked bones because they are brittle and sharp.Your cat can cause severe injuries, and don't feed them on chocolate or onions because they are toxic.

What should my cat drink?

Water is the best drink for your cat.Keep plenty of fresh water available at all times.Using a pet water fountain encourages cats to drink more and keeps them away from taps and toilets.

It is not recommended to give your cat milk regularly. You can experience gastrointestinal problems, including diarrhea, and many cats cannot tolerate it. Read also: Cats and chocolates: Can Cats Eat Chocolate?
