Munchkin cat Temperament 

Munchkin cats are:

  • Playful.
  • Agile despite its short legs.
  • Kittenish.

The Munchkin cat is a truly lovable cat. Although they have this naturally occurring shorter legs than the average cat this does not cause the Munchkin cat any undue stress or long term harm.

Apart from her short legs she is every bit a normal cat that loves to play and cuddle. Also because of her short legs this makes her more aerodynamic and able to take corners with much more speed and stability than a longer limbed cat.

Often referred to as the magpie of the feline species the Munchkin cat is also attracted to shiny objects and will squirrel them away for you to find unexpectedly and also being quite dog like the Munchkin cat also likes to bury things. Even once they have fully grown they will maintain their kittenish ways. A very affectionate cat the Munchkin cat gets along well with other cats, dogs and children and is particularly fond of her own humans. 

Where does the Munchkin cat come from? 

The Munchkin cat, it is believed, originated from Europe but all traces of this cat naturally occurring in Europe appear to have disappeared. The Munchkin cat was spotted next in New England in the 1970’s and then in Louisiana during the 1980’s. 

What type of Body does the Munchkin cat have i.e. coat, patterns etc? 

The Munchkin cat body characteristics include: 
  • Small to medium body type.
  • Short legs. 
  • Round heads. 
  • Round eyes. 
  • Wide spread ears.

The History of the Munchkin cat? 

Starting in the 1940s, cats with short-legs have been documented throughout the world but Munchkin kittens didn’t first appear until 1983 when Sandra Hochenedel adopted a pregnant cat that gave birth to short-legged kittens.

Munchkin cats are one of the kitty breeds that were based on one family of cats as the mother cat and one of the short-legged males became the foundation for this breed.

Since the male cat went outside a lot, he bred with plenty of other cat breeds, creating a reasonably sized local population of these cats with short legs. After some controversy, Munchkins were recognized in 1995 by TICA but are still not recognized by the CFA or the ACFA due to concerns over the breed’s health. 

Food the Munchkin cat eats? 

The Munchkin cat will eat normal cat foods whether it’s a tined food or biscuit. You should always follow the recommended feeding guidelines for your cat breed. 

Is the Munchkin cat an indoor or outdoor cat? 

The Munchkin cat is definitely an indoor cat, although she can climb her ability to do it in an emergency to get herself out of trouble is difficult and is a hindrance when trying to get away from fights with other felines or animals. 

Does the Munchkin cat have health problem? 

The Munchkin cat, despite its short leg length which has no adverse effect on its wellbeing, is generally a healthy cat but as with all pets she will benefit from annual health checks to make sure liver and kidney function are normal and also for any tooth decay from about 8 years onwards.
