History

Cornish Rex kittens are one of the cat breeds that were originally developed accidentally. The breed began in July of 1950 when a male kitten with tight tiny curls was born in a litter of a normal British Domestic Shorthair. The cat’s owner noticed that as he got older, his curls became more pronounced so he talked to a British geneticist who determined its unusual appearance was due to a gene mutation. This original cat then formed the basis of the Cornish Rex cats we find today. Cornish Rexes were recognized in 1962 by the TCFA (the Cat Fanciers Association) and is now recognized by the American Cat Fanciers Association and the International Cat Association as well.

Appearance

One of the main things that sets Cornish Rexes apart from other kitty breeds is their distinctive rows of tight, small curls (which as mentioned above, were the main characteristic that started the breed). Cornish Rex kittens also have smaller heads than other cat breeds and large ears which are quite distinctive. They also have a strong chin and a Roman nose with hallowed cheekbones, giving them the appearance of elegance.

Cornish Rex kittens are one of the slender and muscular cat breeds and have long thin legs to complement this look. Their fur is very short and soft and its curls give it an appearance similar to a washboard. They are one of the kitty breeds with many fur patterns, coming in 42 different color variations. Adult Cornish Rex cats will generally weigh between 6 and 10 pounds.

Health

Cornish Rex cats are one of the generally healthy cat breeds, easily reaching 15 years of age. It is a common misconception that because this is one of the kitty breeds that does not shed much, that it is hypoallergenic. However, this is not the case. Despite shedding less, they are still a source of the dander that causes allergies to cats so people searching for a hypoallergenic pet should look at other kitty breeds. For more Information about cornish rex cat breed, click here.
