The Kurilian Bobtail cat is an all round great cat. They can be gentle and loving, playful, happy to see you, eager to please, acceptable of change, happy to meet new people, self entertaining when necessary but also quite happy to enjoy the quiet times as well. The Kurilian Bobtail cat has been referred to as dog-like because he will greet you at the door and can be taught verbal commands. A feline with a strong and wild appearance these cats are gentle, loving and adore attention.

Where does the Kunilian Bobtail come from?

The Kurilian Bobtail cat originates from a group of Islands off the coast of Western Russia and Northern Japan called the Kuril Islands. Stretching over an area of 700 miles there are 56 volcanic islands between the Kamchatka Peninsula at its most western point and North Japan. What type of Body does the Japanese Bobtail have i.e. coat, patterns etc?

The Kurilian Bobtail cat body characteristics include:

  • Medium to large body.
  • Semi-cobby, compact.
  • Pom-pom type tail.
  • Large round heads with round eyes.
  • Medium sized ears that tilt forward.
  • Shorthaired and longhaired.

Colors include:

  • Black.
  • Blue.
  • Brown.
  • Red with silver undertones.

Patterns can be:

  • Tabby, (mackerel, classic and spotted)
  • Tortoiseshell and any amount of white

The Kurilian Bobtail cat is commonly mistaken for the Japanese Bobtail cat but when closely studied as much as these cats look the same they are completely different in every characteristic.

For example the body type, the Japanese Bobtail cat body type is a fine bone structure unlike the Kurilian Bobtail cat which has a much more solid looking structure and is a markedly larger cat. The Japanese Bobtail cat has a smaller triangular shaped head where the Kurilian Bobtail cat has a rounder pear shaped head. 

The eyes in the Japanese Bobtail cat are more oval compared to the rounder shaped eyes of the Kurilian Bobtail cat. History of the Kunilian Bobtail?

Although in terms of recognition by the CFA and TICA the Kurilian Bobtail cat is a new breed in fact this cat has been around for hundreds of years.

What is commonly referred to as a natural breed meaning it is a cat that has evolved on its own and is not the product of cross breeding to produce particular characteristics.

The natural instincts of this particular feline as a result of its wild surroundings include excellent hunting skills whereby it has been reported that a bear will retreat if it sees one of these cats. It also has excellent fishing skills and will have no problem tackling a 5kg fish. In fact, so fond of water is this cat, given half a chance it will share its human’s bath.

As wild as these cats will be in the natural environment they are happily domesticated and are loyal and dedicated to their humans. The males of this breed are also unusual in that they take their parenting responsibilities very seriously being one of the few that actively spend as much time as the mothers in tending their kittens.

Food the Kunilian Bobtail eats?

Is the Kunilian Bobtail an indoor or outdoor cat?

The Kurilian Bobtail cat is as happy to be confined to indoor living as it would adapt to life outdoors. A self entertaining cat they are not destructive in the home.

Does the Kunilian Bobtail have health problem?
