Is the American Curl an indoor or outdoor cat?

The American Curl is either an indoor or an outdoor cat depending on how you would like to look after them. Keeping your cat indoors can be beneficial as it will reduce or even stop contact with other cats preventing illnesses being past to your cat.

American Curl cats are one of the cat breeds that were originally bred by a natural mutation. In the early 1980s in California, two cat fanciers got kittens from Domestic Longhairs and Shorthairs with unique curled ears. At first they thought these American Curl kittens might be Scottish Folds but after research discovered that the curled ears of these kittens were unique. After that they worked to get American Curls recognized as an independent kitty breed and in 1986 TICA (The International Cat Association) accepted them followed by the CFA (Cat Fanciers Association) five years later.

American Curl kittens can vary greatly in appearance due to breeding with other cat breeds. However, the one distinguishing factor is that all American Curl cats have the curled ears which give the kitty breed their name. If you have a newborn American Curl do not be surprised by their straight ears. Between three and five days after birth their ears will begin to curl into a tight rosebud which will then gradually unfurl until about 16 weeks at which point their ears will have reached their signature look. Even the variation of ear curl in this breed is great with some cats having almost straight ears while others are curled almost 180 degrees. Read also: American Shorthair Cat Breed Information.

Other than their distinctive ears, American Curl cats resemble many other cat breeds in that they have a medium build and rectangular body. Their eyes are walnut-shaped and very expressive. Their coat lays flat and is silky to the touch while because of the minimal undercoat American Curl kittens do not shed as much as another kitty breed. American Curls generally weigh between 7 and 10 pounds. Because of their large genetic pool, they are generally healthy with no genetic defects. One word of caution however: due to their curled ears they are prone to ear infections and you should therefore clean your kitten’s ears frequently and gently.

American Curl kittens are active, playful, affectionate and kitten-like throughout adulthood. Not only do they get along great with other cat breeds and other types of pets but they also do well with children. This means that American Curl cats are great for any type of family regardless of the number of kids or pets. This kitty breed genuinely loves to be with people and will follow you around your home wanting to spend more time with you. If you need a quiet cat, the American Curl is a good option as they are not very talkative. For more Information about american curl cat breed, Click here.
