Appearance

The feature that distinguished Chartreux cats from other kitty breeds is their round heads with excellent smiles and copper or gold eyes. Chartreux kittens have fur that is blue-toned (like that of other cat breeds such as the Russian Blue) and of medium-length and wooly. They also have an undercoat that is dense and has a texture similar to that of sheep’s wool. This is a small to medium sized cat breed with females generally weighing from 6 to 9 pounds and males ranging from 10 to 14.

Personality

One word of caution about Chartreux kittens is that they are one of the most sensitive cat breeds and because of this will not respond very well to scolding. Instead, positive reinforcement is recommended. Chartreux cats are excellent mousers but generally prefer to interrupt their playtime with short naps.

Chartreux kittens are also very affectionate although they are one of the kitty breeds that prefers not to be held or sit in your lap. Although they get along well with everyone, they will generally pick one person within a household to create a special bond with and do so with gentle head butts. Chartreux cats are gentle giants who rarely speak and when they do, do so with a soft mew. They are not only great with both kids and other pets, but are also one of the few cat breeds that travel well. Read also: Chausie Cat Breed Information.

History of the Chartreux

The Chartreux is believed to get its name from either being associated with the Carthusian monks living in the Chartreuse Mountains in France, North of the city Grenoble or, named after the liquor made by the Carthusian's, Chartreuse liqueur. However, in 1972 the Prior at the monastery at that time was believed to deny the connection with the cat and the monks as their were no records in the archives to say otherwise. As the cat's name is Chartreux that mean Carthusian, the connection was made.

A different possibility is that the name came from a Spanish wool made at a similar time in the 18th century.

After the Second World War, measures were taken to prevent the loss of the breed by cross breading the Chartreux with Persians, British Shorthairs and British Blues.
It is also said that Chartreux from the USA were brought over to France to help prevent the breed from dieing out in its breeding country.
